Why Personalization Matters
Traditional education operates like an assembly line β every child studies the same material, at the same pace, measured by the same exam. At Cogdel, we believe no two children's growth trajectories should be identical. Our 1:3 teacher-student ratio isn't a marketing slogan β it's the institutional foundation that makes true personalization possible.
One Student, One Timetable: The Full-School Elective System
Cogdel is one of the few international schools in Southwest China to implement a full-school elective system (ε ¨η§θ΅°ηεΆ) across all K-12 levels. Classrooms are assigned to subjects rather than homerooms β students move between classrooms according to their own personalized timetable. No two timetables are the same, because no two students start from the same place.
Real Case: Cross-Division Personalized Timetable
A Grade 5 student was performing at primary level in English, but their physics, chemistry, and biology capabilities had already reached middle-school level. Cogdel designed a cross-division personalized timetable β English and humanities classes remained in the Primary division, while science classes were taken in the Middle School division alongside older students, participating in labs and research.
This student's scientific potential was fully unleashed without being held back by English, while their English steadily improved in a level-appropriate streaming class.
This is the core value of the elective system: no waiting in any dimension, no rushing in any dimension.
Four Operating Principles
- Placement by ability, not age β Every student takes the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) adaptive diagnostic upon entry, generating a personalized learning starting-point report across all subjects
- Dynamic adjustment β Timetables are re-evaluated and optimized each semester based on academic progress and growth data
- No grade-level barriers β Advanced students take advanced courses across grade levels; students needing reinforcement receive dedicated tutoring β no one is left behind or held back
- Every student, a unique schedule β Not "fast track" vs "slow track" β every subject is studied at the level that best fits that individual child
1+N Mentorship: Every Student Has a Personal Growth Committee
At Cogdel, there's never just one teacher behind a student. Starting in high school, the "1+N Mentorship System" ensures each student has a dedicated support team:
- Homeroom Mentor β The daily companion who knows the child's emotional state best. Weekly one-on-one growth conversations
- Academic Mentor β Designs advanced pathways for strengths, targeted intervention plans for weaknesses
- Competition Mentor β Plans AMC, BPhO, UKChO and other international competition pathways with structured preparation timelines
- University Counselor β tracking and planning university applications from Grade 6 onwards
- Wellbeing Mentor β Monitors mental health and emotional wellbeing with regular assessments and support
All five mentors convene monthly for a "Student Growth Summit," sharing observational data across all dimensions and synchronizing adjustments to the student's development plan. No child falls through the cracks in any dimension.
The 8-Dimension Growth Portfolio: Replacing the Report Card
This is Cogdel's most fundamental educational innovation β replacing the traditional report card with an 8-Dimension Competency Growth Portfolio:
Every teacher at Cogdel functions as a "growth sensor" β not writing subjective end-of-term comments, but continuously capturing and recording specific changes in each dimension throughout daily school life. At the end of each term, every student receives a complete Personal Competency Portrait β not a score slip.
Real Case: How Leadership "Grows"
A Grade 7 student's first "Leadership" entry read: "Voiced their own opinion during a four-person group discussion." A modest start.
One year later, the Grade 8 record had evolved to: "Synthesized group members' viewpoints into a structured proposal and served as lead presenter for the class showcase."
By Grade 9, the same dimension recorded: "Led a cross-grade PBL project team, delivering a 30-minute English research presentation to external visitors."
Every change is specific, traceable, and demonstrable. This is not an abstract rating of "good leadership" β it is a clearly visible growth curve.
Why Not a Report Card?
Principal Lu Kun explains it directly: "A score tells you how many points a child got on a particular day. It cannot tell you β has the child started asking more questions recently? Are they giving up less often when facing difficulty? Have they started showing concern for their peers? These are the capabilities that truly shape a life. Traditional report cards measure what's easiest to measure, not what matters most."
Adaptive Streaming: Precision Placement in English and Mathematics
English and mathematics are the two subjects where precise placement matters most in an international curriculum. One-size-fits-all classroom instruction inevitably produces "some starving, some drowning."
English Streaming System
- Diagnostic on Entry β Every student completes the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) adaptive assessment, precisely locating their reading, writing, listening, and speaking levels
- Cross-Grade Streaming β English classes are grouped by actual proficiency, not age or grade. In a Grade 5 classroom, one child may attend Level 2 English while another attends Level 4
- Co-Teaching Model β International teachers focus on speaking, listening, and writing; Chinese English teachers focus on reading strategies and grammar fundamentals. Both collaborate on each student's improvement plan
- CLIL Integration β In middle school, students acquire English naturally through science, humanities, and other subjects. The principle: not "learn English first, then learn science," but "master English through learning science"
- 3,000+ Leveled Readers β A digital English reading platform ensures every child has materials matched to their current level, progressing from bridge books to academic papers
- International Benchmark Targets β KET highest level by Grade 5, PET by Grade 8, IELTS 6.5-7.5 by high school graduation
Mathematics Streaming System
Mathematics follows the same streaming logic. For mathematically gifted students, Cogdel offers:
- Cross-grade advanced courses β middle schoolers can take IGCSE Mathematics, high schoolers can take A-Level Further Mathematics
- Competition training pathways β systematic preparation for AMC 10/12, SMC, BMO, and other international mathematics competitions
- University-level bridging β top mathematics students are connected to university-level content by their mentors
For students needing reinforcement, Cogdel provides precise diagnostic gap analysis, weekly targeted tutoring, and learning strategy coaching.
"Uneven" Isn't a Problem β It's a Clue to Where Talent Lives
There's a well-established consensus in international education: the A-Level curriculum is naturally optimized for students with uneven subject strengths. Students choose only 3-4 subjects from 21 options β the ones they are best at and most passionate about. No need to spread effort evenly across everything.
How Cogdel Supports Students with Uneven Strengths
- Amplify strengths, don't just patch weaknesses β Strong in math? Take Further Mathematics. Strong in sciences? Choose Physics and Chemistry. Strong in humanities? History, Economics, Psychology are available. Cogdel supports students in pouring their energy into what they do best
- Depth in strengths β Advantage subjects are paired with competition mentors and advanced coursework, helping students reach the highest level in their talent areas
- Floor, not ceiling, for weaknesses β Weaker subjects receive dedicated tutoring with the goal of "not falling behind," not "excellence in everything"
- Real case β A student with average English but exceptional mathematical talent received a cross-division timetable, attending advanced math courses and AMC competition training at higher grade levels. They were ultimately admitted to a G5 university mathematics program in the UK
Principal Lu Kun often says: "An uneven profile is not a defect β it's nature's signal telling you where your talent lives. Our job is not to fill every hole, but to build a tower on the highest peak."
The Philosophy Behind Personalized Learning at Cogdel
Three Educational Convictions
First, every child has their own Zone of Proximal Development. Great education doesn't enforce uniform progress β it finds the step each child can reach with a stretch, then helps them take it. A 1:3 teacher-student ratio turns this from ideal into daily practice.
Second, the evaluation system determines educational behavior. If you only measure students by exam scores, schools will devote all their energy to test preparation. Cogdel's 8-Dimension Growth Portfolio fundamentally changes "what we teach" and "how we teach."
Third, the best form of personalization is "being seen." When a child discovers that their school truly knows who they are, what they're good at, and what help they need β this feeling of being fully understood is itself the strongest source of intrinsic motivation.
