Cogdel School Chengdu is delighted to announce that a student has achieved Global Gold in the 2025 Senior Mathematics Challenge (SMC), organized by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT).
About the SMC
The Senior Mathematics Challenge is the UK's premier mathematics competition for students aged 16-19. Its 25 multiple-choice problems are carefully designed to test mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency with techniques — not rote application of procedures. The top 10% of participants globally receive Gold awards.
Why SMC Matters
The SMC is widely recognized by UK universities — particularly for mathematics, engineering, physics, and computer science programs — as an authentic indicator of mathematical ability. A Global Gold places its recipient in an elite category of mathematical talent and provides a powerful signal in competitive UCAS applications.
From the Mathematics Department
"SMC problems test whether you can think mathematically, not whether you've memorized techniques. A problem might look like it's about geometry but actually require an algebraic insight. Our student's Gold award reflects genuine mathematical understanding — the kind that transfers to any quantitative discipline."
Congratulations to our Gold medalist and to all SMC participants. Mathematical thinking is a superpower, and you're developing it.
