New Semester, New Energy — Every Child Seen and Warm

March 19, 2026 | Cogdel School Chengdu

As the Spring 2026 semester began, Cogdel School Chengdu launched a school-wide psychology and wellbeing program under the theme "Every Child Seen and Warm" — affirming that emotional wellbeing is not a supplement to academic rigor, but its foundation.

Why This Matters

In an academically ambitious environment, a student who feels anxious, invisible, or disconnected cannot learn effectively — no matter how excellent the curriculum. Research consistently shows that emotional safety is a prerequisite for deep learning. At Cogdel, we take this seriously: "Academic excellence and emotional warmth are not opposites. We pursue both with equal commitment," says Principal Lu Kun.

The Program Structure

Designed by Cogdel's in-house counseling team, the program runs throughout the first month of semester and includes:

A Teacher's Observation

"In the first wellness circle, one student barely spoke. By the third session, she was facilitating the discussion herself. Sometimes children don't need solutions — they just need to know someone is truly listening." — Cogdel Form Tutor

What Makes This Different

Many schools have a counselor on staff and call it "pastoral care." Cogdel's approach is different in two ways: First, it's proactive, not reactive — we don't wait for problems to emerge. Second, emotional wellbeing is embedded in the school's operating system, not outsourced to a single department. Every teacher, mentor, and dorm parent is part of the care network.

The program continues throughout the semester with monthly check-ins and an open-door counseling policy. As one student put it: "At Cogdel, someone always notices if you're not okay. That matters more than I can explain."
